About Me
Emily (Xuan) Yang
University of Melbourne JD graduate who is passionate about commercial and corporate law. Emily is always quick to learn the ropes and apply legal concepts at the intersections of various industries/contexts. Beyond law, Emily enjoys learning about other industries such as the startup/technology industry to better understand market trends in various contexts - she has even picked up coding as a hobby in the process!
Emily is the recipient of the Melbourne Law School's Legal Design and Technology Award and is honoured to be named as a Microsoft Student Ambassador after placing Top 9 nationally (out of 1500 participating developers) in the 2021 Microsoft Student Accelerator.
She has had personal experience advising a startup during their seed funding stage, reviewing contracts and facilitating conversations with global investors and accelerators such as University of California, Berkeley's Skydeck and New York University's StartEd. The for-impact startup was eventually able to successfully raise funding with a global accelerator. This experience sparked her interest in startups/tech and determination to deliver the best business outcomes for her clients.

Project Description
- User-friendly chatbot that helps employers navigate and understand the casual conversion scheme
- Automatically generates PDF of letters such as "offer of casual conversion" based on chatbot's collected responses
Skills Developed
- Legal research on the casual conversion scheme
- Drafting of key clause summaries and letters of offer in accordance with the Fair Work Act
- Engaging with different stakeholders to improve user experience

Project Description
- Research project that helps accelerate solutions for health and wellbeing of children and their families through information sharing
- Researchers use data collected from newborns and their parents to discover trends and patterns of various health issues
Role Responsibilities
- Researching into laws and guidelines of different jurisdictions regarding data storage overseas (e.g. privacy laws, health laws, GDPR)
- Translating relevant laws and guidelines into user-friendly best practice guides for researchers
